East District Family Resource Center

  • * The community had changed
  • * Stores had closed
  • * There was no safe place for kids to hang out
  • * You had to go downtown to get health care
  • * An evening out with the kids just cost too much...

Miss Annie knew it could be different. She and other women from the community found a space. They went to City Hall. Council agreed to let them rent the unused city building. $1.00 per year. The Jackson Foundation gave money to rehab the space. Community residents abated asbestos, picked colors, and designed everything from programs to bathrooms. That's how we started in 1998.
